• Clay – Clay litters come in two specific types. These are regular and clumping. Clay is not considered to be environmentally friendly because of the carcinogens that some brands contain. It is popular because of its ability to soak up moisture and the clumping type is obviously a good choice because it is easier to clean up.

• Recycled Newspaper – Newspaper is a popular material that can be recycled into many different things. Cat litter is one of these items that newspaper is reclaimed for. While it does not offer the clumping that many cat owners prefer, the cats are not going to shy away from it either.

• Reclaimed Wood – This is also a form of cat litter that does not clump and is very good for the environment. So much sawdust goes into the trash heaps and landfills that can be used for cat litter. It is absorbent and again, this is a type of cat litter that is close enough to the texture of clay that a cat will use it.

Clay has been the traditional cat litter for most cat owners. It is easier to clean up when the clumping type is purchased but many cat owners would like a more natural material for their cats. Cat will use any of the three mentioned litter types so the only condition a cat owner needs to consider is how environmentally friendly their cat litter needs to be.
