Kitty litter can be a funny thing with cats. They seem to either love it or hate, much like the owners. An additional tip would be to make sure that when the new litter is tested, it is immediately tended to after the cat has done their business. It will simulate the environment of the automatic litter box and get the cat used to a totally clean box just minutes after the go to the bathroom. While it can be a bit of nuisance for the cat owner to keep up on, it will only last a few days and then after that, the automatic litter box will take over the daily cleaning routine.
