Why Do Cats Scratch?

Why do Cats Scratch?

Cats and scratching are like oreos and milk. One goes with the other. It is a cats natural instinct to scratch and nothing you can do will change that. Cats are not purposely being destructive when the tear into your couch, it simply feels good to them.

Cat’s scratch for many reasons, so as an owner it is you job to give them the appropriate tools to scratch on.
1. Cats scratch to mark their territory. One of their scent glands is in their paws so when they scratch they leave a clear indication to the next cat that “this is mine.”
2. Cat scratch to maintain their claws. As claws get longer the scratching allows the outer sheath to come off. This also helps to keep them in prime condition.
3. Cat scratch to defend themselves. Sometimes this is a very aggressive act against something they do not like. However, many times they will use their claws when the jump in your lap for stability. They aren’t intending to hurt you; they are using them for safety.

Cat trees usually have several areas to appropriately scratch. Many have cardboard scratchers or sisal wrapped around them. Some are on angles to that the cat can stretch out. When you look for a cat condo, think the more scratching areas the better!

A companion cat may scratch for another reason. They understand that it is a way to get their human’s attention. This is their way of saying they may be hungry, want to play, or just need a good cuddle. Don’t scold them for this. Instead, redirect their attention to something else and ignore the negative scratching.

Remember that scratching is part of a cat’s survival instinct. Think like a cat and give your companion appropriate things to scratch. Positive reinforcement will easily teach your cat that their cat condo is a better place to scratch than your couch!

Sherpa Cat Carrier

Traditionally, people have always transported their cats in solid plastic carriers with a mesh grate on the front to stop their pet from escaping. Though this is a relatively cheap and easy way to move a cat, these carriers are quite bulky and take up a lot of space for something that is rarely used in most families. Luckily, there has been a recent explosion in terms of carrier design with soft cat carriers coming to the forefront.

These carriers are made from nylon which is easy to clean and is also waterproof, as well as being very strong. They can be simply squashed down when you want to store them away and so take up very little space. Other advantages over traditional crates are that they come in a huge variety of styles and colors to suit every taste.

The market leader in this type of carrier is the Sherpa cat carrier. These are high quality, stylish items which you can be proud to carry your cat in. They have plenty of mesh to allow ease of air flow and you can access the compartment either through a top or side zipped door. They come in different sizes to allow for different sized breeds.

Also, if you want to transport your cat by airline, then you may not be aware that you will need an approved airline cat carrier. This is because airlines are very particular in how animals are transported and so have strict criteria for the carriers. A lot of owners in the past have ended up buying a dog kennel for this reason as it has been much easier to find one which is approved. However, Sherpa now have approved carriers so you can buy one that is designed for a cat’s needs.

So, next time you think about buying a cat carrier, remember that there is now an even greater range of choice.
