Why do Cats Scratch?
Cats and scratching are like oreos and milk. One goes with the other. It is a cats natural instinct to scratch and nothing you can do will change that. Cats are not purposely being destructive when the tear into your couch, it simply feels good to them.
Cat’s scratch for many reasons, so as an owner it is you job to give them the appropriate tools to scratch on.
1. Cats scratch to mark their territory. One of their scent glands is in their paws so when they scratch they leave a clear indication to the next cat that “this is mine.”
2. Cat scratch to maintain their claws. As claws get longer the scratching allows the outer sheath to come off. This also helps to keep them in prime condition.
3. Cat scratch to defend themselves. Sometimes this is a very aggressive act against something they do not like. However, many times they will use their claws when the jump in your lap for stability. They aren’t intending to hurt you; they are using them for safety.
Cat trees usually have several areas to appropriately scratch. Many have cardboard scratchers or sisal wrapped around them. Some are on angles to that the cat can stretch out. When you look for a cat condo, think the more scratching areas the better!
A companion cat may scratch for another reason. They understand that it is a way to get their human’s attention. This is their way of saying they may be hungry, want to play, or just need a good cuddle. Don’t scold them for this. Instead, redirect their attention to something else and ignore the negative scratching.
Remember that scratching is part of a cat’s survival instinct. Think like a cat and give your companion appropriate things to scratch. Positive reinforcement will easily teach your cat that their cat condo is a better place to scratch than your couch!
